In general I am mainly in a long position otherwise i wouldn't be in the stock obviously. But if you are confident it is overheated etc it is a way to gain on the dip, without selling. By not selling you also don't reset the 12 month CGT discount.

I especially like this technique with my dividend stocks as they form a large part of my income nowadays. Selling these is extra risky to me in the event i am wrong and they climb after i sell.
