    The main downside that I see is the lack of registered IP rights. I.e. no patent applications or patent in place.

    That said, noting the notorious difficulty of enforcing those rights in China, and the prevalence of counterfeiting regardless of IP protections, I'm not sure that patent protection would assist. Relying on NDAs and trade secrets does however seem a bit weak. Little could be done to stop a competitor developing the same tech, or reverse engineering it. The main obstacle would be starting up manufacturing operations and distribution chains.

    Given it's a competitive sector anyway, overall I don't see this downside as being super concerning.
