The only thing I can think of is that shares have a vote and options don't. However the numbers are not likely to be material in any vote and I can't imagine anything coming up in the near future which would involve a contentious vote. Otherwise I can't see any advantage. Perhaps Tim just wants to shout his belief in the future of ESS.
