I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but a there are good DHI's & bad DHI's. DHI is a term an oil co. uses to describe something interesting (be it bright or flat) on a seismic section near or within a particular oil/gas prospect.
It is not actually a Direct Hydrocarbon Indicator, it is an INFERRED hydrocarbon indicator, but direct sounds better, so it is used. It is inferred by a company for varying reasons (usually the smaller comanies in a JV will mention DHI's). HDR may call it a DHI, but you probably won't hear WPL saying anything of the sort, because, as the majority of the above posts can attest, mention of a DHI can be misleading (well it was really the oil oil oil call that was misleading).
It is only a hydrocarbon indicator once you have drilled it and found hydrocarbons. Many "DHI's" get drilled and are dry holes or have minor shows. Ofcoarse once a well is a producer you can look at the seismic and say "yeah that DHI was real".
Cool heads are needed here, there are too many over-excited posters in this particular thread.
