I forgot to mention the most important thing when getting the size of the wood correct for the fire....Have a look at what is coming out of the chimney, if there is any smoke, you need to have either smaller wood size or more air going into the firebox . Remember not to overload it as more wood in the box means less air in there at the same time.
The greener or the wetter the wood, the smaller it will need to be to eliminate the smoke..This applies to all stages of the fire, ie just starting or once up to running temperature.
