The silver lining might also be in highlighting the shortcomings in quality that US manufacturers like Abbott have, when compared against NZ producers like Synlait. To a far greater extent, it is what happened following the 2008 melamine in China, which undermined trust in local producers.
There is a segment of the US consumer market that already perceives foreign (mostly European) IF as superior in quality, resulting in a black market trade. You'd have to think a debacle such as this only serves to fuel that perception and expand the range of countries on people's radar.
