I'll repeat: thanks for your generosity in sharing your thinking.

"I am happy to pay for the outsourcing of that trade execution and expertise in understanding of investing in "new- generation", technology-driven micro-cap businesses."
The past six months have been an incredibly difficult environment for those specialising in either technology or microcap businesses, and doubly so for technology microcap businesses.

    1) Have recent difficulties changed your view on fund managers in these areas?

"But how have those managers performed when the market conditions were different."

Many investors are pointing to the 1970s for a parallel. Only the timeless Buffett was professionally managing money back then. Many local fund managers seem to have been around post GFC and have only known "a 10-year decline in the cost of capital" as you put it.

    2) Does this preclude young and upcoming fund managers?

Let me share my inconclusions to date on the issue. I find it hard because:
    a) You could pick fund managers when their style is in favour, and hold until their style goes out of fashion. As I've read through local and international fund manager reports, a majority stick to their style and sectors even if it looks like certain underperformance (unprofitable tech, or profitable but overvalued tech being recent examples, and anything value in the 2010s). This requires work and monitoring.
    b) You could pick fund managers that move with the markets for a long term hold. They exist but are rare and/or expensive (fees can be excessive but arguably worth it). And sometimes their moves don't pay off. This is my preferred option, as it should be least maintenance outside of just indexing.
    c) You could pick fund managers in nano to small caps if they are nimble enough to pick winners and exit. Otherwise they can be trapped when larger illiquid positions run into problems. This requires work and monitoring.
    d) You could pick the the local index. While it is not great, it is hard to find consistently better through the cycle.
