Na storing the spent rods has very little risk really. There isn't much of it and you're basically just chucking it deep underground and locking it up. Not much can go wrong if you chose the site properly (no flood, earthquake, volcanic risks). Mining is inherently more dangerous and less socially palatable in terms of exposing contaminents
