Not an issue, just interesting.
I expect that most people would not realize that 25% of the vote + 1 vote can be enough to win.
I expect that most people don't realize that if there is 100% preference swapping between 2, 3 or more candidates that together get 50% of the vote plus 1, then voters for the single candidate that gets 50% of votes less 1 vote have no further say in the outcome.
Whether a multi way preference split would produce a fairer result depends on whether one considers that 75% of 1st and 2nd preferences should outweigh 50% of 1st and 2nd preferences. For me 75% beats 50%.
It is hard to break in against the two party system, and the current system makes this just a little easier, but it is still not easy. For me this is a good thing and how it should be, but I am surprised that major parties allow this system to continue i.e. it disadvantages both alp and lnp.
