Compounding the problems, Origin Energy on Wednesday told investors that it had encountered difficulties sourcing coal for its Eraring facility in the NSW Hunter Valley, the nation’s largest power station, and would be forced to secure more expensive supplies of the fossil fuel.
Lower output from coal-fired power stations across the eastern seaboard has been boosting demand for gas-fired electricity, helping drive the sharp rises in wholesale gas and electricity prices.
