CCS is the main object of their desire so as to justify sticking the coal/gas. But CCS has failed very test and so isn't viable. Only the grey hydrogen, using pyrolytic tech, provides solid carbon for capture and value adding, as promoted by Dr Alan Finkel. this is what the M. Gov wanted to support, and fair enough the Gov did subsidise several companies with grants to encourage gas pyrolytic hydrogen production.
HELE is a form of what Howard called "clean coal".... but its a fallacy.
yet gas extraction allows fugitive emissions on a vast scale creating localised plumes of methane, as detected by satellite analysis of atmospheric gaseous concentrations. this eliminates gas-led hydrogen as a viable alternative imo.
