Australia to me more of a marketplace these days less of a 'nation' with any set of defining values, unless you equate 'market dynamics' as a set of principles to define onself by.
Democracy is very much a 'lesser evil' compared to other models but will only survive if you truly believe the old adage of
" by the people for the people", it is not for sale.
We must get lobby groups out of the political process, start with excessive political donations and work up to lobby groups in Canberra and eradicate the concept that democracy can be brought for a price.
Not just talking about the corporate lobby but all forms of self interest represented by financial gain.
Lobby groups take a myriad of forms, corporate, higher education, environmental, religion to name a very few.
They all have one thing in common, trying to promote the interests of the minority on the majority.
Which is the exact opposite of the initial intention of democracy.
