Dear, dear @picastoc - you overestimate my prowess - I am the original 'inventor' of basic things, including shorthand - only ever learnt German shorthand - and re-tooled it to English - can be done, believe it or not. I'll try and do a sample, but my handwriting isn't very good. Just took a photo, but am appalled at the quality, or rather lack of . .. my shorthand and my handwriting. So you just have to trust me.
I tend to 'wing' things - and I often come undone, but my life is never without some adventure . .

Yours is a work of beautiful calligraphy, no doubt similar to your craftsmanship in knitting.
In essence German shorthand uses basic letter shapes from the original alphabet and then you learn shortcuts for the most common words - I was able to do 200 words per minute once in a competition and received a Certificate. However, I had very little need of shorthand in most of my professional life, until I applied for a job at the Legislative Assembly here - part of the test was a very simple letter dictated to me to be taken down in shorthand and transcribed by a very nice, but also old-fashioned gentleman I'll never forget. I got that job - and more later on.

Did you know that the ancient Romans already had scribes who took down their Forum (or Senate?) speeches in shorthand?
