Lithium has been around for many decades if not centuries and it's being safely/widely used in (almost) all appliances, from tiny cells to mega batteries.
There is a Battery tech stock which I was in previously, called LIS - A Brisbane company, founded by Deakin Uni professor and students. Their project is to replace Graphite with Sulphur (by using their tech BNNT) to run Cathode field with cheaper cost but produce much longer in both usage (10x or so) and charge cycles..
If their LIS batteries have become successful for commercial production, there would be a bit shake up in Graphite, Nickel and all other components currently used in LiO2.
But still - Lithium will be needed as main component. as always..
Hydrogen perhaps, could challenge Lithium in future in automobiles. However, unlike Lithium it's non-metal so can't be used in appliances.
I ran down to Bunnings today to get a 9V battery for my smoke alarm. Li battery has cost me $15, compared to all others which I noted, around or less $5.
