While I'm not a fan of receiving dividends for myself due to tax implications, having a higher dividend yield makes companies more attractive to 'boomer money' / retirees etc. who are more likely to invest in stocks as an income stream.
This often has massively positive effects on a company's share price (see: GRR) from which all holders then benefit, regardless of what "kind" of investors they are.
Buybacks are better in theory but often not in practice (see: BSL, S32, etc.) in their end result.
