It only appears they are strong because the conflict is right on their doorstep and we are sending warships from our home shore right to their front doorstep, so it seems they are stronger due to advantage of their proximity.
Imagine if Tasmania broke off, and China tried to stop us reclaiming Tasmania by sending warships half way across the world, it would appear we are stronger because of proximity advantage.
