It's a cyclical stock, I don't know for sure if coal is going to stay high or not but the reasons I got in was because the sector was hated and was very cheap although looking into a black hole latter 2020, with coal at $50US, TER was the worse about to go bankrupt, WHC was 700M in debt @$50 coal and it looked like it may need to do a CR and was close to 80 cents, I got into ter, nhc and whc at that time. I pretty much fubbed my ter position thou selling at a slight loss which ended up being the best performer but still very happy with how things turned out. You have to sell out when things look great because they don't often get better after that but is when most people want to buy so that is when you sell. All the gains from the coal companies are now in the past, they have been made, new people coming into the sector hoping for the same gains unfortunately if past cycles hold true they are going be bag holders.
Gosh is a nice person I know on these forums and he got burnt on WHC last cycle, regardless of whatever happens, you have to say to yourself I got my money now and going to take it.
So this is one of his posts in 2018. Thought WHC was great, safe, paying great dividends and then it all collapsed on everyone when then created the next buying opportunity. The picture below explains why I exited coal and we all know what happened after, I'm not holding during declines.
