Friday's total volume of KAR was 8,251,067 and Thursday's short sales were 247,221. If all shorters on Thursday closed out on Friday they constituted less than 3% of Friday's sales so they would have had little influence on Friday's trade.
On the other hand I'm expecting short sales on Friday to have increased and to have contributed to the fall in the SP and the short sale stats to be released on Monday will reveal all.
BTW, total short sales for Mon to Fri last week were 371,600.
