The way I look at it is, maybe they knew that Steve may spit the dummy. The BOD wanted to have some potential CEOs lined up (looked for 6 months), in case Steve had a spit (which he did) and leave them in the lurch (which he did).
But yes I tend to agree, though I cant put myself in their shoes.
