Sierra,
Voters in Australia do have the chance to vote out a government if they feel strongly on any one point. I think that Whitlam's election had an anti Vietnam/Conscription element to it.
Equating Australian forces to the Nazis is a long bow.
Concientious objectors are one thing. These have been accomodated in Australia since WWI. To take up arms for the enemy is a whole different argument.
David Hicks was not the first Australian to take up arms with the enemy. Robert Chipchase and Ronald Barker were Australian POWs who joined the Waffen SS during WWII. Both were sentenced after the war for it. There was also a New Zealander in the British Free Corps of the SS.
I think David Hicks is the only Australian captured while fighting for the enemy.
