Actually there have been plenty of studies on chronic disability as the result of injury for decades. Essentially the people who get their function back without pain tend to be those who are motivated and dedicated enough to endure a prolonged and painful rehabilitation. But that involves different expectations and support from people who often are told that if its painful you should call sick and not move until there is no pain and the injury has healed.
Following that philosophy has the worst outcomes. Even sprained ankle immobilised in a cast for 6 weeks can result in a chronic disability. But in truth, many people fail because they cannot push themselves to continue a rehab program for 6 to 12 months and start to believe it won't work. And there is a whole industry dedicated to encouraging the call sick and take time off at home with meds and sick pay rather than get back to work even if its painful. But being back at work with supportive colleagues provides more than just pay. It provides lifestyle, structure, companionship and emotional stability and support for independence.
