One other thing...stupid calls for a referendum and the "will of the people." Ignorant people always call for a referendum on this topic. It hasn't changed since the gold rush and the anti-Chinese movement and White Australia policy of the time.
If historically Australian politicians had not shown leadership on immigration and gone against the populist view this great country would be one giant paddock full of sheep - literally and figuratively.
