M8, The problem is that Mark did make "a big error in judgement", as you say, and now the market, and in fact his own shareholders have lost faith in him, and by association, they have lost faith in CTO.
Mark has held himself up as a expert in the field of gold mining, and has been openly critical of others in similar positions ( BDG ), and now he himself cannot deliver.
But, he did not make only one "error in judgement", he has made a career of it in his highly paid position at CTO.

His ability to put in place a "large scale operation" is very much doubted by the market place.

The fact that, as you say, the forecasts were "totally unachievable" is not a valid excuse for his failure but is more a confirmation of his poor management.
