It could be as simple as Merck thought IMU was not far enough along its research path. BP don't get to be BP by taking too many risks. To be honest, I did not read that much into the Merck move away from the deal with IMU. Merck loss anyway
IMU still has some travelling to do and some goals to score but I am sure that continued success will make it a $40bil an attractive takeover target in the near future. The announcement along the lines of "we have a cure for cancer" should just about do the trick.
