Yes, Yes, yes, someone has a clue. In a past life I ran a superintending laboratory certifying quality and quantity for Hay Point, DBCT, Abbots Point and sometimes Newcastle. Part of your info not quite right. All coal has a fingerprint. 5% is easily detectable if not from same mine same seam. Reflectance and Petrography pick it up.
So no power plant is designed to take 8,000 kcal/kg coking coal feed. Nothing to do with smelly, sticky, gooey, swelly stuff.
The coking coal has to have some properties like high ash fusion temp, low slagging index, low pollutants like mercury, nitrogen, sulphur, chlorine and a hundred others essential. Most coking coals easily meet these criteria as it is thermal coal that is the crap.
So all you do is blend a bit like @kovit says and you put a really crappy Indonesian coal or high ash Indian crap cheaply into the blend to take the edge of the heating value.
The supplier does not do the blend, the power station does the blend as they do every day of the week.
I hope that helps. Anyone with questions can message @CoalTracker on twitter if you like. You would have to let me know your handle if you want me to answer.
