With shorting yes you are responsible for the dividends, i myself have never had to pay this on a position and normally check investsmart.com or some website similar that lists which dates the companies actually go ex div and will be paying dividends. Normally once this date is past however the share price should decrease inline with the amount of the divididend being paid. (i cant remember its name something like parity? or equillibrium? something i learnt at uni and forgot hehe) Anyway if you are shorting and it does come about it shouldnt hurt to much due to this fact that after the dividend has been paid the share price should decrease in line with the dividend payment...
