There is NO diplomatic relationship between US and Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act. However, the Act does provide for security needs (selling arms), but No diplomatic relationship.
Taiwan does Not have an Embassy in the US plus over 180 countries.
That has been the policy of the US since Carter and official position of the UN.
You should note, since the G7 summit, the EU have also started sending official delegations to Taiwan (occurred on 19th July).

This is a very deliberate attempt to change the status quo. Its not something out of the blue.
