Hi mulga,
Nope I don't think i am paranoid about this. I thought it was common sense.

If you put physical in a bank - to get good security you need a vault, which is expensive and also not in your possession.
If you put it into a box in the bank (cheap) - but not really secure. There are no guarantees and they move your box around - I had one branch close and move across the road - it worked out ok, but the point is if your box goes missing there is no comeback at all.

If you want to store it at home - you can do it one of two ways - have a safe - the problem here is that the safe is easily seen in a break in - even a floor safe is easy to spot if someone suspects you have one. Unless you pay a lot for a safe, most safes pretty well only keep our honest men and at best slow teenage breakers down a bit - they are pretty easy to get thru.
So what are you left with - a hidy hole - hidy holes are cheap and reliable and the only thing that is a risk is if anyone blabs -
Would you let it be known that you always had $20,000 or more (imagine $1m - how much attention would that attract) in cash hanging around the house?? Pretty dumb if one did let it be known -- and people talk. So what is the difference with precious metal??
And kids most of all talk - in fact they can't shut up - ever - so no, I don't think I am paranoid at all - just common sense.

Now if you want a hidy hole - all I am saying is that a skirting board is almost perfect - even in a rented house - when you leave it looks exactly the same as when you came, and only you know. What you do is take of a little bit of skirt - cut a small bit out with a jig saw or similar, cut out a little area of plaster behind, put your metal in the cavity and then patch and paint the skirt - all done in an hour or so - easy peasy and very secure.

Also, please tell me if you ever see me dribbling or sitting with my mouth open for extended periods :)
