Shares are an asset, a store of value, a piece of the company.
This is the same as a piece of gold, property, bonds, collectibles like whisky, coins, motor vehicles, artwork, etc., and they move up or down in value over time.
I would say that Government agencies like Centrelink and it’s clients/dependants would disagree with you as they would look at the value of a persons shares or other assets and thereby determine the amount if any that said person would receive.
A companies market capitalisation fluctuates depending on shares on offer and price per share while operating its business.
Finally, why would you invest in the share market if it wasn’t to have the value of your shares increase over time, giving you the opportunity to profit and cash in when it suits your needs.
Shareholders have been looked after with cheap shares at 37 cents when Altura was purchased and also the increase in the share price since.
I have no problem with management being rewarded for the wealth they have created for all concerned, including governments, with royalties and taxes in the future that helps the nation on many levels.
