I don't agree with you that public servants are so focused on their own interests rather than the best for their country - i have never been a public servant but have put many bids into government organizations and both lost and won some of those bids in the USA, UK and Australia. I agree that the bureaucracy is immense and quite stifling but generally I have felt that most public servants attempt to do a good job (not so sure about politician) with the mind bending limitations they have to work under. I have put many bods into US government organizations and found the main problem is "influence" and "being on the inside" - you get "acceptance" from sponsoring events, being at the same university, club or society (they call it fraternities). In the military its also about being "part of the club" including regiment, ship etc - it's the same in most places in the western world I just hope that Stephen Long and James Dobchuk are "part of the club"
