"the reefs of the Towers were claimed to be the most difficult in the world to work for reason of the dip,which ranged from almost vertical to flat with the trend chiefly straight with the result the drives were bends of all shapes. The reefs could not be depended upon to maintain their thickness, pinching and widening according to the lay of the country, and the treacherous nature of the ground was responsible for thousands of pounds of timber keeping the hanging wall up"
