a bit of a vague recollection that Toyota had a car similar to the EV1 and they had a lease life of I think 5-10 years. Can't exactly remember the lease life or the model.
However the lease stipulated that at the end of the lease the vehicles had to be returned to Toyota and Toyota were to dispose of them. There was a big outcry because again the vehicles were running fine at the time that the lease ran out.
People too wanted to keep them but were not allowed.

Yes, I too believe that some underhand tricks might be involved. Possibly deliberate.
I have been around a while now and long enough to know that this is a possibility.
I have seen some real underhand tricks from people in management to get outcomes that they want at the expense of employees.
Sitting in on meetings where I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
One of the reasons I left my management positions and learnt other skills.
