Without the alternative energy supply in place, it's just too naive to cut the existing resource like gas/ coal, you can expect anyone to spend life without electricity or cooking gas.
The worse energy shortage would drive people to cut forest and burning wood to cook or heat up, no? Check out the recent stories happening in EU.
