Bundyau, next time you decide to stop in the middle of the busy Princes Highway when there are only two lanes, one each way, all I can say is - DON'T DO IT. (Don't do it on any two lane road.)

    Options:

    1. (least safe, not recommended) - pull over right off the left side of the road (ie right off the road into the dirt or grass) and wait till you see no vehicles on the road at all, then very quickly cross. Use that option ONLY if you can clearly see AT LEAST 500m both ways, preferable further. Go to option 2 if there is a crest or bend in the road in either direction.

    2. (preferred) keep driving until you see an intersection. Turn left into the minor road, then do a u-turn when it's safe to do so, then wait at the corner of the highway until it's safe to turn right. Then turn left off the road to do your meeting with the press. If there is an extra lane for turning traffic you could choose option 3.

    3. Most country roads have a turn lane at an intersection. These are marked with an arrow and have an extra lane for ongoing traffic to continue through. These are safe for right hand turns into minor or other roads. In this case you could turn right instead of left. Then make a u-turn when it's safe to do so and turn left on the Princes Highway.

Abbott's car was not at an intersection of any kind and there was no place for vehicles to pass. The broken white line is to indicate you may cross the white line to overtake another vehicle. It's not to indicate that it's okay to just come to a dead stop in the middle of traffic going at 100kph.
