It might appear that some people are unconcerned about fixing the planet. In practice I think that most people realise that civilization has evolved to the point that we can have an effect on the atmosphere but they do not understand it. What is presented in the media is filtered, politicians will play football, topics fade and then return in slow waves. It is always the minorities that are alert and keep up the pressure that will produce the change.

In the 70s and 80s I was a mover and shaker. Even the vocabulary to adequately discuss the environmental values had not yet been invented. We started from nothing. We attended work from 9 to 5 and then devised and planned and implemented from 5pm to 9am. It went on day and night for what we thought would be a few months, but no, it went on for years and years non stop. There was little time to be a normal person. Sleep was a luxury. At times we were also despondent. We lost a few and then began to win. It was an almost unbelievable achievement to eventually have an actual "Minister for the Environment" appointed. It spread to other states. When the movement became nationally recognised we played a major role in effecting a change of federal government. Again, to us it seemed almost unbelievable. We won a High Court case, etc. Never again will I believe that little people with good brains cannot change the world. However, it does take commitment and time. You also learn a lot about human nature and politics.

Thus in the scheme of the bigger picture, December's Climate Conference was a very temporary setback. It was already on a world stage and the scientific data is becoming more compelling with time. Lessons will gradually sink in and geothermal energy generation will have to become the ubiquitous norm. It is rather difficult at the moment to see where small companies like TEY will get their funding to completion, but if they can keep standing long enough with a good partner, the next wave of support should come.
