"Even in the long term, BMW does not want to get into cell production itself. Together with partners, the Bavarians want to set up six factories in Europe, North America and China that will produce a total battery capacity of up to 120 GWh per year. BMW justifies its decision to forego its own cell production with the pace of innovation. A small manufacturer like BMW would not be able to cope with the associated costs on its own. To reduce the CO₂ footprint of batteries in production, cell manufacturers are only allowed to use green electricity. In addition, a circular economy is to be pushed. BMW's partners are to be obliged to rely more on lithium, cobalt and nickel from recycled sources."
