Shorting isn't evil if market power isn't used against the average.
Shorting is evil if people like hedge funds borrow $10m worth of stock and use it to manipulate the price of stock against the average.
Don't get me wrong, i like being able to short things when I feel it's moving away... however using borrowed market force is pure manipulaion
