Russia is the major owner of the pipelines and supplies the gas. (Russia and EU energy companies)
My bet is US had fingers in it , stop EU from buying in rubles and now will use the usd , which is now stronger against global currencies. Money on the conversion and supply side, there are a lot of other benefits aswell.
