Not sure why people keep on talking about lithium as the technology to be used for stationary batteries. Lithium is uniquely unsuited to this role. As you say, it is useless for long term storage. It is also very temperature sensitive and will require air conditioning in most of Australia, wasting a lot of power in the process. And its capacity deteriorates significantly in 10 years.

It is most useful in vehicles where the light weight and rapid power output is critical. And given the demand for those vehicles, the price will go up to meet that demand. There will be cheaper batteries available for stationary storage that are better suited to that task.
