Ultimately, the end game that you depict is not one that I want nor anyone else with a sane mind. But, as you say, the nationalistic agenda and 'invent thy enemy' is deeply entrenched in the US psyche.

Gold is a barometer for all this. As we watch it move around we are seeing the wider struggle unfold. In this respect, gold is headed high as it appears that the problems are also likely to escalate.
