Ukraine gave up its nuclear capability for peace and independence and trade with the EU. It didn't deploy nukes but maybe in retrospect that was a mistake!
It wanted democracy and EU membership. Russia wasn't indicating that the US was an enemy rather Putin made all the right diplomatic noises about democracy etc. Until he started an aggressive policy of invading it was working.
The pro Ukrainians in here aren't fascists so no, your logic fails.
