Yes poor Marum is a little bit confused, he would mean anode and cathode instead of plates and instead of insulator he should of said separator however the risk of dendrites shorting out cells using current manufacturing techniques probably would increase with energy density.
The answer at the moment is temperature control and strict charging management to minimise dendrite growth although when the elusive solid state cells finally reach commercial production we should be able to stop worrying about those pesky dendrites.
