You (and many others) assume that a 'winter of discontent' in Europe would lead to decreased support for Ukraine. On the contrary I think Europeans are well aware that Putin is to blame for both the invasion and the consequent energy shortages and economic slump, and especially in countries closer to Russia (Poland, the Baltics, Czechia) there will be calls for increased support for Ukraine to defeat Putin and finish the war once and for all. Just look at Italy's recent election - there was certainly a wave of discontent there and a turn to populism - and yet the newly installed government is at least as (if not more) supportive of the Ukrainian war effort than its predecessor.

And while they may not be as champing at the bit as the Central and Eastern European countries, the bigger economies like Germany and France know that Putin has burned his bridges with Europe, there is no going back to how things were. They know that peace in Europe won't come with the Ukrainian surrender (aka 'ceasefire') that many on hotcopper want, it will only come with the defeat of Russia and the removal of Putin.
