FM I see no use to p in his pocket, and tell him it's raining. So my slant is to give practical advice.
I would of recommended some hobbies but it sounds like he just has no time! Therefore-deal with the problem (the career).
My input: your smart enough so don't let your talents go to waste. Sometimes it pays to reflect on the decisions you have made when you were pretty young.
Me old man started his under graduate UNI aged 50, old lady has just started a uni course in her 50's. It's never too late to reinvent yourself.
