Absolutely, one of the major risks to hydrogen is competitors, crazy huh!
I've said previously exactly what you're saying, new battery technology will be fighting for market share against Lithium ion, hydrogen, pumped-hydro, solid-state batteries, lithium tungsten, Zinc-manganese oxide, Organosilicon electrolyte, Lithium Sulfar, sodium ion, etc etc...So many technologies out there.....
Sodium-ion seems like it has good potential from reading... doesn't solve the weight problem for trucks/planes/ships, but cars might be a good market.
