You could say the same about silica and quartz, (cost US$40/tonne) its only worth a lot of money when its turned into silicon metal at US$3,000 to 5,000/tonne to make computer chips and solar panels.
What everybody forgets is that it takes heaps of power ie 16,000kWh to produce one tonne of silicon metal. China produces 90% as other countries like the EU have expensive unreliable power and its 5 to 10x the price / kWh.
