This is one of the aspects of having a novel ore; spodumene has been mined for decades in Aus and is well understood, while micas have not been widely mined in the west as far as I know (I know the Chinese mine a lot), This generates cost in designing a new process (and uncertainty about how it will go), but it also means there are likely going to be significant improvements of that process in time, like this appears to be.
