Bit while Mao was ruining the chinese economy with his "great step forward" and later "the cultural revolution"....Taiwan was prospering .

It wasn't until Deng Xiapings pragmatism of allowing a free market that China was able to utilise it's great scale and prosper although even now . per head Taiwan still better .
Xi is presently limiting that free market and holding the reins much tighter than Deng would ever like to have seen for the sake of a vibrant chinese economy .
