I just depends on which part of America you are discussing when you state 'But yet, the American spoken language is atrocious, I can barely understand most Americans when they are speaking.'
I have been to America on a number of occasions and had no trouble in understanding their speech except, when you arrive at LA airport and you try to communicate with any of the numerous workers from 'South of the Border'. Or you could be unlucky and need to communicate with a person from the Deep South.
I encountered a lady whilst visiting the Grand Canyon, from what's termed 'Upstate NY', who was rather derogatory regarding the speech of New Yorkers (city that is)! But she spoke 'perfect' English.
