From my reading the dispute isn't so much about pay but more about legacy conditions in enterprise agreements that the company say are uncompetitive but the unions want to maintain in future agreements.
For example you might get a job on a tug as an apprentice if you already have family working for the company because the union gets a say on who is employed.
